Why some pockets of fat persist
Some fat deposits are more stubborn than others because they are biologically structured differently. Areas such as the lower abdomen, love handles, saddle bags and inner thighs contain more so-called alpha receptors, which slow down fat loss, and fewer beta receptors, which promote it. That is why these areas of fat are often the last to disappear when exercising and dieting — or may not disappear at all. This is genetically determined; it is not a question of discipline.
This is exactly where cryolipolysis comes in: controlled cooling triggers a natural process of cell death in the fat cells. Over the following weeks, the body breaks down these cells and removes them via the lymphatic system. What has been broken down does not return — the treated fat cells are gone for good.
What matters
- Localised padding, no excess weight — Cryolipolysis is intended for stubborn, localised fat deposits, not for weight loss.
- Cell death rather than melting — the fat cells die off and are broken down; they are not merely temporarily reduced in size.
- The lymph plays a part in the decision — Dead cells are removed via the lymphatic system, which is why lymphatic stimulation is part of the process.
- Patience — the results build up over two to three months.
What works against stubborn stains — and what doesn’t
You can’t lose fat from a specific area — the body decides for itself where to burn fat, and those stubborn areas are genetically the last on the list. Doing hundreds of crunches tones the muscles underneath, but they don’t melt away the fat.
Losing weight reduces fat all over the body — yet those stubborn pockets of fat often remain visible because they are the last to respond. And many people don’t actually want to lose weight at all, but simply want to get rid of fat in one specific area. General weight loss is the wrong approach for this.
What really makes a difference in these areas works locally: fat cells are specifically reduced, their removal via the lymphatic system is supported, and the overlying skin is tightened. It is precisely this sequence that we combine.
To be honest: This is not a weight-loss treatment and is not suitable for very large amounts of fat or obesity. It is designed for localised, stubborn pockets of fat in people who are otherwise of a normal weight.
How to tackle stubborn pockets of fat
We reduce the fat deposits, remove them and tighten the skin over them — in that order. Because our rule is: whatever is broken down in the tissue must also be removed.

Is it like CoolSculpting?
It’s the same principle — cryolipolysis, or targeted fat cooling. CoolSculpting is the best-known brand for this method. We use the CLATUU Alpha® device, which features 360° all-round cooling and a dedicated applicator for the double chin. The principle behind it is the same, but the technology differs in the details.
Is the fat loss really permanent?
Yes. The controlled cold triggers cell death in the fat cells; the body breaks these cells down over the following weeks, and they do not return (Review article, PubMed 2023). Important and honest: the remaining fat cells can grow again if you put on weight — as long as your weight remains stable, the results will last.
How much fat is reduced per treatment?
Studies show a reduction in the fat layer of approximately 15 to 28 % per treatment in the treated area (Ingargiola et al., *Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery*, 2015); CLATUU Alpha® is around 20–22 %. One session per zone is often sufficient — for further reduction, a second session is possible after four weeks at the earliest.
Is cryolipolysis suitable for weight loss?
No. It is a treatment for localised, stubborn pockets of fat; it is not a weight-loss procedure and is not intended for people who are overweight (Meta-analysis, Obesity Reviews 2025). It is most effective in people who are otherwise of normal weight but have isolated pockets of fat that do not respond to exercise or diet.
What is the difference between this and liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure carried out under anaesthesia that involves a recovery period and removes larger amounts of fat in one go. Cryolipolysis is non-invasive — no anaesthesia, no needles, and you can get straight back to your daily routine. However, it works more gently and gradually over several weeks.
When will I see the results?
The first changes become visible after around three to four weeks, with the full results apparent after two to three months. This is the time the body needs to remove the broken-down fat cells via the lymphatic system.
Is it safe — does it affect blood lipid levels?
Cryolipolysis is considered to be well tolerated; studies have shown that it has no effect on blood lipid levels or liver function tests (Ingargiola et al., *Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery*, 2015). Side effects are usually mild and temporary — redness, swelling, a numb sensation. We do not treat patients with cold-related conditions such as Raynaud’s or cryoglobulinaemia, or those who are pregnant; we clarify this in advance.
How much does a fat reduction treatment cost at alestetics®?
CLATUU Alpha® costs CHF 500 for a single zone and CHF 800 for a double zone (3-session packages cost CHF 1,200 and CHF 2,000 respectively).
