Why lymph is so important after surgery
Your lymphatic system is the body’s filtration and waste disposal system: it transports tissue fluid, waste products and proteins away from the body and forms part of the immune system. During any surgical procedure, fine lymphatic vessels are severed. The result is swelling — fluid builds up because the usual drainage route has been interrupted. This is a completely natural reaction of the body to the operation.
For the swelling to subside, the body must rebuild the disrupted lymphatic vessels and create new drainage pathways. This takes time. Gentle lymphatic stimulation supports this process: it helps to direct fluid towards intact lymph nodes and keeps the tissue supple whilst the new pathways are forming.
It is also worth checking the lymphatic system before an operation: a well-functioning, activated lymphatic system provides a better starting point — the body goes into surgery free of congestion and well-nourished.

Support before and after your procedure
Lymphatic care involves two phases. Before the operation, we prepare the body: we stimulate the lymphatic system, boost blood circulation and ensure the tissue is in good condition. After the operation — once the wounds have healed and your doctor has given the all-clear — we support the recovery process: we help the body to drain away fluid and keep the tissue supple.
What we don’t do: We do not treat fresh wounds, we do not replace medical aftercare, and we do not promise a specific duration of swelling. How quickly your body recovers depends on the procedure, your individual constitution and the healing process — we support this process, we do not force it.
Safety first: Before we can start treatment following an operation, we need approval from your treating doctor. In certain situations — such as an infection, an unclear seroma, a thrombosis or an unstable cardiovascular condition — we will not provide treatment. We will discuss this together during the consultation.

You might be wondering
When can I start lymphatic care after an operation?
Only once the wounds have healed and your treating doctor has given their approval. The exact timing depends on the procedure — we will coordinate this with your doctor’s instructions. We do not treat fresh wounds.
Does lymphatic drainage really help with swelling?
It can help reduce swelling. A study on lymphatic drainage following a tummy tuck with liposuction showed a greater reduction in swelling than compression alone, although this was not statistically significant (Maningas et al., American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery 2020). There is no guarantee as to how long the swelling will last — this depends on the procedure and the healing process.
Why does swelling take so long to go down after an operation?
During surgery, fine lymphatic vessels are severed, disrupting the normal drainage pathway. The body has to rebuild the lymphatic vessels and create new drainage pathways — a process that takes weeks. During this time, gentle lymphatic stimulation aids drainage and keeps the tissue supple.
Can I prepare myself before an operation as well?
Yes. An active, well-functioning lymphatic system provides a better starting point for the procedure. Before the operation, we stimulate the lymphatic system and ensure the tissue is in good condition, so that your body is free of fluid build-up and well-nourished going into the operation.
Is there a specific Icoone programme for before and after an operation?
Yes. Icoone® has its own protocols for preparing the body before a procedure and supporting recovery afterwards. A clinical trial involving 60 female patients who had undergone a caesarean section showed that treatment with the Icoone® Laser Med resulted in faster recovery and less swelling than without it, with very good tolerability (Clinical trial, icoone® Laser Med 2022). We always begin post-operative care only once the wound has healed and you have been given the all-clear by your doctor.
Do you treat fresh wounds or scars straight away?
No. We do not treat fresh wounds. We provide supportive treatment to the surrounding tissue once the healing process is underway and the area has been cleared for treatment (Overview of Lymphatic Massage in Cosmetic Procedures, PMC 2023). Hardened or scarred tissue can be gently treated at a later stage.
What procedures is this suitable for?
For cosmetic procedures such as liposuction, tummy tucks, facelifts or breast surgery — and also following general surgical procedures, wherever swelling and lymphatic drainage are a factor. Always subject to medical approval.
When is lymphatic care not possible?
We do not treat patients with an infection, an unexplained seroma, thrombosis or an unstable cardiovascular condition. We discuss such situations together in advance — safety comes first.
How much does the support cost?
Icoone® and Endospheres® cost CHF 250 per session each; you can find treatment packages on the Price list. We’ll discuss how many sessions are advisable and how often they should take place during the free consultation.
