What is the difference between BBL and IPL?

BBL vs. IPL - the truth about modern skin rejuvenation in Zurich

BBL vs. IPL in Zurich | Alestetics skin rejuvenation & pigmentation treatment

Both BBL (BroadBand Light) and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) use light energy to rejuvenate the skin, reduce pigmentation, redness and sun damage.
BBL is essentially a branded version of IPL - designed to deliver targeted pulses of light that stimulate the skin and achieve visible improvements.

With alestetics we work with the Lumenis Stellar M22 IPL, one of the world's most modern systems. While BBL often impresses with speed and marketing, the M22 scores with maximum precision, versatility and safety for almost all skin types.

BBL vs. IPL - what does that mean for you?

Both technologies visibly improve the skin's appearance, but the M22 IPL offers more precision, flexibility and safety for different skin types.
For you, this means: natural results, less risk and hardly any downtime.

In short:
👉 The Lumenis M22 IPL delivers equivalent or better results than BBL - with more control, comfort and versatility and less risk.

Why we use the Lumenis M22 IPL

The Stellar M22 is much more than a classic IPL device. It combines several patented technologies:

  • OPT™ (Optimal Pulse Technology): ensures even energy distribution and optimum safety.
  • MSP™ (Multiple Sequential Pulsing): gently heats the skin in several steps - less heat, less irritation.
  • Integrated cooling: protects the skin surface during treatment.
  • Modular system: enables additional laser modules (e.g. ResurFX™) for combined skin rejuvenation.

This allows us to treat over 30 different skin problems - from pigmentation disorders, vascular redness and acne to fine lines and uneven skin texture - individually and comfortably.

What is IPL and how does the technology behind skin rejuvenation (photorejuvenation) work?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a modern light technology that is used for non-invasive skin rejuvenation.
In contrast to a laser, which only works with a specific wavelength, IPL emits pulsed, broadband light - i.e. many different wavelengths (usually between 400 and 1200 nm).

This light can be filtered in such a way that it only addresses certain structures in the skin (so-called chromophores), e.g:

  • Water in the tissue (for general skin tightening and texture improvement)
  • Melanin (for pigment spots or uneven skin color)
  • Hemoglobin (for redness, veins or rosacea)

How IPL photorejuvenation works in the skin

  • Long-term regeneration
With each treatment, the skin structure improves, pores are refined, pigmentation spots fade, blood vessels are reduced - and the complexion appears clearer and more even.
  • Light pulses hit the skin surface
The IPL handpiece emits short, controlled flashes of light that penetrate deep into the skin layers without damaging the surface.
  • Targeted absorption by pigments and vessels
Depending on the filter selected, the desired target structures (e.g. melanin or haemoglobin) absorb the light.
This generates thermal energy, which heats the cells with excessive pigment or the fine blood vessels in a controlled manner and is then naturally broken down by the body.
  • Stimulation of new collagen formation
Gentle heating stimulates the fibroblasts (collagen-producing cells) to form new collagen and elastin.
The result: skin is firmer, smoother and more even - with a fresh, more youthful appearance.

Advantages of IPL technology

  • Natural result: the skin looks improved but not "done" - ideal for anyone who wants a fresh, even radiance.
  • No downtime: You can return to work or go out immediately after treatment.
  • Gentle and safe: thanks to modern systems such as the Lumenis Stellar M22 with OPT™ technology, the energy is precisely dosed.
  • Versatile: Effectively treats pigmentation disorders, redness, sun damage, fine lines and uneven skin texture.

Why sun protection is so important after an IPL treatment

After an IPL treatment, the skin is particularly receptive and sensitive to light, as pigment cells and superficial skin structures have been stimulated or broken down by the light.
UV radiation can easily cause new pigment spots or redness during this phase and disrupt regeneration.
It is therefore crucial to consistently use sun protection with a high sun protection factor (SPF 50) for at least 2-4 weeks after the treatment - even on cloudy days.

A high-quality sunscreen not only protects against irritation or hyperpigmentation, but also prolongs and enhances the treatment result: the skin remains even, clear and youthfully fresh.
