Microneedling is one of the most sought-after methods for firming the skin from within. Anyone looking into it quickly comes across two names: SkinPen and Dermapen. To be clear, because it's often oversimplified: both are professional, FDA-approved medical devices. The more important distinction lies elsewhere – between genuine medical devices and the many cheaper imitations. We at alestetics work with the SkinPen and explain why here.
What microneedling does to the skin
Microneedling is a collagen induction therapy. Fine needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin; the body reacts to this with repair, forming new collagen and elastin in the process. This effect can be demonstrated in skin samples: after several sessions, collagen types I, III, and VII, as well as elastin, show a significant increase.El-Domyati et al., 2015Even the basic work on percutaneous collagen induction showed improvements in scars, fine lines, and loss of firmness (Aust et al., 2008).
You can read in detail below why collagen is the crucial building block in this process and when it begins to decline Build collagen.
SkinPen and Dermapen – both approved medical devices
Often, more difference is claimed than actually exists. Both the SkinPen and Dermapen are professional microneedling devices for use by professionals, both work with adjustable needle depths, and both have FDA approval.
In 2018, the SkinPen was the very first microneedling device to be FDA approved – as a Class II medical device for the treatment of acne scars. In the approval study, approximately 90 percent of those treated reported an improvement in their acne scars six months after three sessions, across all skin types.FDA De Novo DEN160029The Dermapen 4, the current device from DermapenWorld, is also FDA-approved for the treatment of acne scars. Both are therefore reputable choices.
What really matters: medical equipment rather than a replica
The real risk lies not in choosing between SkinPen and Dermapen, but beneath that. Alongside genuine medical devices, there is a flood of cheap microneedling pens on the market and online, which are often referred to simply as „Dermapen» – even though they have nothing to do with DermapenWorld. These imitations vary greatly in terms of workmanship, needle quality, sterility and safety.
So don’t focus on the name, but on three things: a certified medical device, a sterile, single-use cartridge that cannot be reused, and administration by trained staff in a clinic. That is precisely what distinguishes a safe treatment from a risk.
What microneedling is suitable for
Microneedling works wherever there is a concern with structure and skin quality:
- Acne scars – the best-proven application; ice pick, boxcar and rolling scars can be smoothed in depth. Acne scars
- Fine lines & skin texture – stimulates collagen production, thus firming and smoothing the skin. Wrinkles & fine lines
- Large pores – the connective tissue around the pores is strengthened, refining the skin's appearance. Large pores
- Stretch marks – the structure can be mitigated, though not completely eliminated.
One advantage, particularly for those with darker skin tones, is that microneedling does not involve heat and is considered to carry a low risk of pigmentation changes.
SkinPen or Vivace?
For those who want deep heat as well as the benefits of microneedling, there is RF microneedling: Vivace® It combines microneedling with radiofrequency, thus applying a stronger stimulus to the deeper connective tissue. Which variant is right for you depends on your skin goals and skin type.
Why we use SkinPen at alestetics
We've opted for the SkinPen – not because other medical devices are inferior, but because this device aligns with our approach: the sterile single-use cartridge, the gentle vibration, its good tolerability across all skin types, and the clinical data upon which we base our decisions. A conscious choice for a device that we have tested internally.
More information on treatment, the process, and prices can be found on the page SkinPen® Microneedling. The best way to find out whether microneedling is the right approach for your skincare goals is to discuss it during the AURA 3D Skin Analysis – free and no obligation.
Is SkinPen better than Dermapen?
Both are professional, FDA-approved microneedling devices – in this regard, they are very similar. The SkinPen was the first FDA-approved device of its kind in 2018, and the Dermapen 4 is also approved. We use the SkinPen because it fits our approach. More important than the choice between these two is that an approved medical device is actually used, rather than one of the many cheap imitations that are also called „Dermapen».
Is microneedling with SkinPen suitable for all skin types?
Yes. The SkinPen has been tested for all skin types, from light to dark. As it works without heat, the risk of pigment changes is considered low – a particular advantage for darker skin.
Wie viele Sitzungen braucht Microneedling?
As a rule, it's around three sessions spaced about four weeks apart, or more depending on your skin goals. Collagen builds up over weeks to months, so the effects develop gradually.
