Cross-linked hyaluronic acid is stable and malleable \u2013 these are the classic fillers for volume and contours. Non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid is runnier, breaks down faster, and is used for moisture and improving skin texture \u2013 these are the skin boosters. Additionally, molecular weight plays a role: it determines how deeply the hyaluronic acid penetrates. Those who know the difference immediately understand why \u201ehyaluron\u00bb is not always \u201ehyaluron\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you hear \u201ehyaluronic acid,\u00bb you might think of plumped-up lips or a moisturising cream. Both are hyaluron \u2013 and yet they are entirely different things. The reason lies in two properties: cross-linking and molecular weight. We'll explain both from scratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What \u201econnected\u00bb actually means<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hyaluronic acid consists of long chains. In its natural form, the body breaks down these chains within one to two days. For a visible, longer-lasting result, this is too short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why the chains in some preparations are \u201ecross-linked\u00bb \u2013 you can imagine it like small bridges between the chains. The cross-linker called BDDE is usually used for this. The more cross-linked, the more stable, firmer, and longer-lasting the gel is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is precisely this stability that makes the difference between a filler and a skinbooster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cross-linked hyaluronic acid: the fillers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cross-linked hyaluronic acid is stable enough to provide shape. It is placed deeper and can build volume or define contours \u2013 for instance, on the cheeks, chin or lips. Because it is broken down more slowly, the result lasts for several months to over a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose here is a physical one: something is being filled or shaped. It is not primarily about the quality of the skin's surface, but about the structure beneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uncrosslinked hyaluronic acid: the Skinboosters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid is more liquid and is not used for plumping, but for so-called biorevitalization. It is injected into the skin in a broader and more superficial manner, distributes finely within the tissue, and intensely hydrates it. The goal is a fresher, smoother complexion \u2013 not volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it degrades faster, it is used in short series and regularly refreshed. A well-known skin booster principle is stabilised, but non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid, which is produced using a special thermal process and contains a high proportion of pure hyaluronic acid. In studies, non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid preparations measurably improved moisture, fine lines, and the mechanical properties of the skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The second factor: molecular weight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to networking, the molecular weight, or the size of the hyaluronic acid molecules, is decisive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High molecular weight hyaluronic acid<\/strong> It is large. It tends to stay on the surface and forms a moisture-binding film there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid<\/strong> is smaller and can penetrate deeper into the upper skin layers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why the size is used differently in creams and injections.
