Microneedling is one of the most sought-after methods for firming the skin from within. Those who are involved with it quickly encounter two names: SkinPen and Dermapen. First of all, because it is often presented in abbreviated form: both are professional medical devices approved by the FDA. The more important distinction lies elsewhere \u2013 between real medical devices and the many cheap imitators. We at alestetics work with the SkinPen and explain here why.<\/p>

In short:<\/strong> SkinPen\u00ae and Dermapen\u00ae are both FDA-cleared microneedling devices. More important than the name is that a real medical device with a sterile disposable cartridge is used in a clinic.<\/p>

What microneedling does to the skin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Microneedling is a collagen induction therapy. Fine needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin; the body reacts to this with repair, forming new collagen and elastin in the process. This effect can be demonstrated in skin samples: after several sessions, collagen types I, III, and VII, as well as elastin, show a significant increase.El-Domyati et al., 2015<\/a>Even the basic work on percutaneous collagen induction showed improvements in scars, fine lines, and loss of firmness (Aust et al., 2008<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SkinPen and Dermapen \u2013 both FDA-cleared medical devices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here, more difference is often claimed than actually exists. Both SkinPen and Dermapen are professional microneedling devices for the hand designed by professionals; both work with adjustable needle depths, and both carry an FDA clearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SkinPen was the first microneedling device ever approved by the FDA in 2018 \u2013 as a Class II medical device for the treatment of acne scars. In the study for FDA clearance, after three sessions, around 90 percent of the treated patients reported an improvement in their acne scars after six months, across all skin types (FDA De Novo DEN160029<\/a>). Dermapen 4, the current device from DermapenWorld, is also FDA-cleared for the treatment of acne scars. Both are therefore reliable choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What really matters: medical equipment rather than a replica<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The real risk lies not in choosing between SkinPen and Dermapen, but beneath that. Alongside genuine medical devices, there is a flood of cheap microneedling pens on the market and online, which are often referred to simply as \u201eDermapen\u00bb \u2013 even though they have nothing to do with DermapenWorld. These imitations vary greatly in terms of workmanship, needle quality, sterility and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So don\u2019t focus on the name, but on three things: a certified medical device, a sterile, single-use cartridge that cannot be reused, and administration by trained staff in a clinic. That is precisely what distinguishes a safe treatment from a risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
